Meet the crew!

We are travellers.

Steven Ismail

Steven Ismail

Captain

Steven has the heart of a Sailor and has sailed extensively. He lives as he sails… close to the wind. He is a witty, social chap who enjoys a good book, wine, song and whisky in the company of friends, old and new. He has the distinct privilege of calling himself the Captain of Rose-Marie and considers himself fortunate to have such a sterling crew to join him on his adventures on the high seas and myriad of public houses along the way.

Terry James Thorpe

Terry James Thorpe

First Mate

Terry James joined rosemarie in search of adventure and all the challenges that a trip of this kind brings. When he’s not travelling his interests include writing, amateur dramatics, music, training Karate and reading. He’s looking forward to watching the sun rise and set at sea and finding his inner Swashbuckler on shores foreign.

Sverre Bech-Sjøthun

Sverre Bech-Sjøthun

Able-bodied Seaman / Masterchef

Sverre was born into this world, kicking and screaming, with skis on his feet and oars in his hands. Passionate about food, beer, reading, paddling, hikes in the mountain and telemark skiing. He’s been into online sales and marketing since 1999.

Lea Bech-Sjøthun

Lea Bech-Sjøthun

Able-bodied Seaman, Cooks Assistant & Onion Knight

Lea thrives in the waves – or preferably on the waves, although she sometimes tumbles out. Consequently, she spends as much time as possible in her surfski. She joined the crew on a whim, grasping the opportunity – after all, it is in spontaneity that our subjectivity shines through 😉. She helps Sverre in the kitchen, dealing with onion chopping and other emotional subjects.

Barry Carbis

Barry Carbis

The Engineer

Barry was Shanghaied in Inverness and dragged, kicking and screaming aboard Rose-Marie… Realising the opportunity fate had lain at his feet it wasn’t long before he found his place among his fellow sailing desperados. Leaving his previous life at the drop of a sailors hat and and bringing only his ‘bag of tricks’ and high visibility jacket, he soon became Rose-Marie’s guardian angel with his outstanding talent for fixing every and any ailment the old lady sent his way. Barry is like a fine onion… The more layers you peel back the more you find. He has a keen mind and a biting wit, combined with a positive can-do attitude and modest nature. We can’t imagine Rose-Marie without him.

Kjetil Larsen Jaatun

Kjetil Larsen Jaatun

Crew

We were lucky enough to be introduced to Kjetil in Stavanger and he agreed to join us for the first leg of our Atlantic crossing between Gran Canaria and Cape Verde. Kjetils sailing experience and knowledge was a great asset in helping us across the first leg of our Atlantic adventure. His safety advice was especially helpful during our preparations. We were sad to see him go and our morning swims weren’t the same without him.

Arne Grim Maurstad

Arne Grim Maurstad

"The Helminator"

Arne joined us in Cape Verde four our epic 13 day adventure across the Atlantic. With his help we crossed the start line in first place with all sails out in 35knts of wind running with 14.9knts of boat speed, which quickly earned him the title of ‘The Helminator’ and the expression ‘More Sail!’ would become his calling card. Arne’s competitive spirit helped drive us forward through often challenging conditions and his sailing prowess was pivotal in getting us over the line in a very respectable 3rd place. His sailing abilities were only eclipsed by his ability to keep up with our ‘anchor dram’ shenanigans. Legend.
